Just wanted to let you know that I was a member of the 377th Security Police Squadron, security, from 1967-1969.

I was working one of the inner perimeter bunkers the night we were overrun by the NVA during the TET offensive 1968.

It brought back memories and tears.

Thank you very much.

My name would be listed as A2C Robert (John) Peden.

Comments:  My name is Sgt Vincent L. Brown, l served in the 377th SPS from October 31, 1969 until October 31,1970 on Charlie Flight, in Bravo (Bunker 3, mostly) Sector.

Briefly rotated into Charlie and Echo Sectors.

I was also TDY FOR 90 days, to Vung Tau.

I did early posting, QRT and sometimes did SAT (jeep).

I pulled some of the Tangos (the one in the graveyard scared of me).

I had a tour, I'll never forget and I often remember.

I was surfing the net and decided to look up the 377th SPS and came across this site.

It was nice to see others had remembered our service and sacrifice and was keeping the spirit and memories alive.

Keep up the good work and God bless.

My name is Larry J Patch Jr. My father is Larry J Patch Sr. He served with the 377th in Vietnam from September 1967 - September 1968, Charlie Sector.

My father is a very humble man and is my hero.

I am re-doing a shadow box for him but I want something more as he has nothing of his uniforms since he lost them in a house fire several years ago.

Do you know where I can find some tokens for his box?

Like our father, all of us boys have served our country, but he is my hero.

Any tips you have would be appreciated.

Sincerely,
Larry Patch Jr

Comments:  Charles,

On June 2, 2011 you confirmed and clarified some unit and service award information for me. I immediately sought to have the corrections noted on my DD214 for items previously omitted.

Sometime later I received a DD 215, receiving accreditation for the Gallantry Cross w/Palm and the AFOU Award w/V, unfortunately, some information was still missing.

Since that time I have been in contact with the National Personnel Records Center in St Louis, the Air Force Board of Corrections, Randolf AFB, TX, & the Air Force Personnel Office of Public Affairs (AFPC.PA) who in turn referred me to the Total Force Service Center. All to no avail.

Finally in June of 2014, I submitted another SF 180 form to the Air Force Board of Corrections with the detailed information and attachments re: campaigns, and related documentation pertaining to my request.

I humbly asked for their assistance in getting this matter resolved.

I was contacted 30 days later stating that my request was over two years old (dating back to my initial DD214, circa 1974, so yeah it was definitely over two years).

Further stating the board would review my request and if the information was indeed correct/accurate it would be forwarded for processing which could take an additional 90 days.

On October 4th I received an updated DD215S confirming the information initially omitted.

My VSM now includes the 3 bronze stars depicting the campaigns I served through while in country and received confirmation on my Expert Small Arms Ribbon.

It took a while for me to realize how important this information was. In 2010 my Dad passed away. He was a WWII veteran. He served in 3 campaigns in Italy, The Northern Apennines, Po Valley, and Rome-Arno.

I created a memento box based on dad's DD214, including his medals, unit patches, his CIB, an original field sewing kit, along with other artifacts he kept neatly tucked away.

The Army kept excellent records in those days, everything was duly noted on his DD214 which made is easy to complete.

The memento box came out better than anticipated. A true testament to his military legacy.

This got me thinking about creating something similar for my children. Unfortunately my DD214 was a mess.

Thanks to the information you provided along with some determination and consistent follow up, my military information is now complete and accurate, as is my memento box.

Dad's box has a WWII Insignia Medal on the top center of this box, mine obviously, the Vietnam Insignia Medal.

Charles, thanks for being so readily available and willing to assist.

I greatly appreciate everything you've done for me personally and for what you continue to do in helping others.

Regards,

Your Friend and Brother,

Michael

Comments:  The 377th SPS held their reunion April 24-27, 2014 in Wilmington DE. Attending the reunion there were over 161 guests. The breakdown included 91 377SPS and 70 spouses and/or guests representing 36 States. Also a record number of 30 plus 377th first time attendees! Speaking of first timers, a group of 6-7 guys from C FLT, Bravo Sector 68-69 meet at the reunion and it was the first time some of these guys have seen their brothers in 45 years, what a memorial occasion!

Another first timer was Dr. Raymond Huston, 66-67. In Vietnam he was known as Lieutenant Huston, the veterinarian that helped save the most famous dog, “Nemo”. The ability to share “dog” stories added to a great meeting for the K-9 Handlers.

We were pleased to have the Colors presented at our banquet by the 436 Security Forces Squadron Color Guard, Dover AFB. The “National Anthem” and “God Bless America” were sung by MSGT Michelle Jackson of the 436 SFS. The commander of the 436 SFS honored the 377th SPS when he asked if they could present at our banquet a special award to one of their troops.

SSGT Jason Spangernberg, K-9 Handler was recognized by the USAF as the 2013 Outstanding SFS Member. He was awarded the “Colonel Billy Jack Carter Award”. This award, in his honor, recognizes security forces members who have excelled in safeguarding Air Force personnel and resources. Spangenberg received the award because of his significant achievement during his deployment to Afghanistan. Colonel Carter was the Commander of the 377th SPS 67-68 during the TET offensive. Lt Colonel Joel Briske, Commander 436 SFS and Colonel Mel Grover (Ret) 377 SPS presented the award.

All I can say is “what a reunion!” I hope those who were unable to attend this reunion and after reading some of the highlights, you will keep checking the 377th SPS web site for information regarding the next 377th Security Police reunion scheduled for 2016 and plan on attending.

You guys had better places to live in than we did. We had hootches, six men only, outside urinals and crappers. The smell was bad but when the daily burn was on, it woke you up.

I worked Phantom Flight, mostly on the sea side. The POL site, which was very interesting. Even the K-9 hated to go there.

Comments:  The consolidation of the two museums at Lackland was at the direction of the AETC Commander.  The action was entirely staffed at AETC Hq as far as we know.   The folks at Lackland to include the Curator and theSF Center were not in the loop.

The Museum Foundation is meeting with the AETC staff members who worked this issue on August 12th.  At that meeting we will learn the factors involved in this decision and be able to plan actions as appropriate.  It goes without saying that we will keep all parties informed as this issue progresses.

In the interim it behooves us all to calm down and await the informed story.  We do not need any more "hair on fire" or "sky is falling" messages and condemnations of personnel.  The facts are not yet known and inflammatory rhetoric is not called for.  As soon as the Foundation Board knows what the plan is we will convey it to all.  Be assured that the Board has your concerns at heart and likewise will do the right thing to insure our heritage is given its proper due.

Thank you,

Mel Grover

Comments:  Sore, nasty subject but since I left Tan Son Nhut in December 1968, I have a lingering festation in my mind, over how Robert was killed.

He was in the radar tower, next to the AP messhall and the old French barracks.

I have my version of what happened and how the entire tower got shot up and we had about ten or fifteen WIA’s.

Is there anything in your archives on this incident.

I did talk to author Keith William Nolan but he passed away and we never came to a satisfactory conclusion on what happened that day.

Can you or a member help me?

It has burned a hole in my heart since day one.

Dad died from a brain tumor in Jan. 2012.

I am in the process of reading Keith Nolan’s book on Tet 1968 and I really wish Dad were still here to answer questions.

I’m writing you to see if you could help me determine where Dad was during the fight, and also to put me in touch with guys that might remember him.

From my recollections, he said he was on a QRT.

I remember him talking about being in a graveyard with bullets flying overhead, so I’m wondering if he was in Echo sector????

Your site looks great.  I’ve been using it to put faces to the names in Nolan’s book.

I also want to commend you and your comrades in arms for your service in Nam and your bravery in action.

Generally, Honor Flight at this time is only accepting WWII and Korean Vets.

Due to Dave's terminal medical condition, he's been granted a space on the June 7th, 2014 flight.

The visit includes all of the War Monuments as well as the Changing of the Guard at Arlington Cemetery.

On the return flight there will be a "Mail Call."

Would it be possible to email 377 SPS members requesting them to write a card or letter to Dave to thank him for his service and to welcome him home?

Letters can be sent to Dave Dowdell c/o Christopher Dowdell, 2472 Stoneleigh Ct, Dublin, Ohio 43216.

We are traveling to Ohio and will be there on June 3rd, if letters could be there by June 4th, I'll make sure they get to his sponsor prior to June 7th.

In 2005 this gentleman named Wayne Salisbury, became ill with heart problems.  He and his wife, Tobey, had given their hearts to the Tan Son Nhut Association and had been working full out on continuing the the family of members and the association itself.

Wayne and Tobey did not inform anyone of his illness and after several operations and hospital stays, this WARRIOR came home.

He has been in and out of the hospital ever since.

Now he is in again in the hospital and as always his Heart ( Tobey), is beside him.

Please send Up to God, all of your good thoughts and PRAYERS!!!

Wayne has forever had your SIXES and I am now requesting that you have his SIX, please.

He would so appreciate your love and friendship for a Vietnam Brother.  So would I!

I do so thank you very much for your support!

I already have your SIX.

Comments:  This is for the 377th Air Police web site. My name is Richard Roberts. I was a Sgt. at Tan Son Nhut Air Base from July 1966 to July 1967. I was there during the attack on December 4-5, 1966. I was assigned to the 051 bunker. May God watch and keep Cyr, Fischer, Hebron, and Mills as I remember Cole, Riddle, and Bevich.

I was in Echo Sector. I spent my last eight months there. When I worked the 051 bunker we only had three men there. I had the M-60 slot. I wont be attending the reunion this year. Hopefully I'll be the next. I only found this web site a few days ago, but i'll keep track from now on. Have fun and enjoy the reunion. Best to all the 377th.

Comments:  My name is Sam Talbott, I would like to say that I am very happy that I found this amazing website.

I would also like to say that my dad Paul Talbott served beside you.

He was assigned to the 377th Security Police Squadron, he was there during Tet.

Over the years he has shared with me stories of his experiences while in country.  He arrived in country in December 1967, after Tet he was assigned to the Heavy Weapons Unit.

He was the gunner to the Quad .50 cal gun trucks that the 377th had just recently received.

I would like to say thank you to both serving our country and having this website available that keeps my dad’s unit living with spirt.

You have done a wonderful job at keeping this site up and running, Thanks again.

Respectfully, Sam Talbott

Ralph Ball is my uncle, mom's brother.

It is very moving to see how you have honored your brothers.

Ralph helps me a lot with my racecar and tells me stories about combat quite frequently.

It's nice to be able to put faces with the names and see what TRUE heroes look like.

God bless you and thank you for your service and taking the time and effort to build something to help the younger generations remember the sacrifices made by so many great men.

Comments:  Hi Everyone, Here are a few updates for the reunion:

1.  Our guest speaker will be Jim Ross, US Army 25th Infantry, B troop 3/4th Cav who will give the Army prospective of TET.  Some of the 377th SPS who are attending the reunion are aware of the importance the 3/4 Calvary played during TET, the assistance they gave to the 377th SPS in defending and repelling the enemy.

2.  Those who were at TSN in December 1966 and especially dog handlers will enjoy meeting then 1st LT Raymond Huston, DVM who performed surgery and likely saved the life of one of the most famous K-9 dogs, “Nemo”.  This will be Dr. Huston first time attending a SPS reunion; he is looking forward to meeting and talking with 377th SPS vets.

3.  Also, joining us will be Col Mel Grover.  He was then a Lieutenant and Commander of the night shift security, during the TET offensive.  I am sure many of you may remember Lt. Grover and most likely served under his leadership.

4.  Both the Historic Philadelphia and Valley Forge tours are handicap accessible but both places have very limited wheel chairs to loan to visitors. If anyone needs a wheel chair or walker we have found a facility near the hotel that will rent the equipment.

5.  There will be display tables at the reunion in the hospitality room if anyone would like to bring pictures, plaques, awards or any thing from TSN/377 SPS that you feel would be of interest to other attendees.

6.  Those who are coming in early or staying late you are about 1 hour from the Jersey Shore, Atlantic City, Wildwood and Cape May which are all nice places to visit especially Cape May with its Victorian homes.  Also in Cape May by the airport there is a Forgotten Warriors Museum (Google) a private effort by a Vietnam Vet.  Also located in Wildwood is a mini Vietnam Wall.  If you have any question about the Jersey Shore email/call me.  Oh yea, great salt water taffy.

7.  We are honored to have the 436th Security Force Squadron from Dover AF Base to present the colors at the Saturday night banquet.

8.  There is a group of area restaurant that are located 6 miles from the hotel.  They includes: AppleBee’s, TGIFridays, Red Lobster, LoneStar, Olive Garden, Famous Dave’s and Ruby Tuesday’s.  If you are craving a good cheese steak sandwich the Claymont Steak Shop is 1.5 miles away.  Finally, if you don’t want to leave the building, the hotel will be preparing special selections just for the 377th.

9.  To view who will be attending the reunion go to the website, www.377sps.org.  The list is updated weekly by Charles Penley who also maintains the web site.  If you have not been to the website you are missing a big part of your experience with the 377th SPS.  This is also a chance to make contact with those who were stationed with you.

For questions email:

Charles Penley at:  cepenley@chartertn.net
Jim Stewart at:  jstewart@centurytel.net (Jim keeps the updated database)
Tim Clifford at:  tjcliff@consolidated.net.

Now that you have this information, it is not too late to squeeze a few more in but space is limited.

Hope to see you at the reunion April 24-27, 2014 in Wilmington, DE. A final itinerary will be sent the last week of March.

Welcome Home,

Tim

Comments:  Hi Everyone,

It is only 69 days until the reunion but only 14 days until your registration is due.  If you are planning to attend the reunion and I hope you are; please I must have your registration no later than Friday February 28, 2014.

This is important since the week of March 3rd I need to provide the tour company and hotel a head count.  This is necessary in case we have to order additional tour buses or change the hotel meeting room.  That would be necessary due to the large number of attendees.

So please send in your registration and don’t forget to include a picture we will give them back to you at the reunion.  You may either mail or send electronic pictures.

Your cancel check is proof of registration or if you are not sure please email me.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone at the reunion in April.

NOTE:  If anyone requires a chair lift on the bus please let me know so we have the proper buses for the tour.

My name is Robert (Bob) Lee.

I served in Alpha Sector, from March 1968 until March 1969.

I was so sorry to see that Msgt Bill McKissick and Ron Pope had passed.

I don't know if anyone let you know that Sgt Dave Kannon was killed, shortly after returning to Florida, in an auto accident.

I went back to Edwards, AFB, and got an "Early Out" to go back to school.

Dave Wirsing (Dec 67 - Dec-68) also went to Edwards.  Dave and I went back to school in the San Francisco Bay area, went to work in Sales for Canadian Pacific Airlines, each married and started families.

I currently have a corporate housing company in Folsom, California.

Keep up the great work,

Many thanks,

Comments:  Let me add a bit to the "rest of the story" on this the eve of the anniversary of TET....

I cannot nor would I refute the history of the 3/4 Cav and am indeed grateful for their gallantry and in a real sense for my life.

However, let's not loose sight of the fact that 2 1/2 - 3 hours of the attack passed before the 1st elements of the 3/4 Cav arrived at the perimeter .... they had to fight their way there.

For that intense eternal time the 377th Security Police Squadron, 2 platoons of its Army augmentees, a company of Vietnamese airborne and 3 ARVN tanks blunted and stood up the attack of the "column of enemy battalions" so that Army LFT choppers and artillery could pour it on the enemy and buy the time until the Cav and the VNAF and USAF could get on the targets.

This helps explain why in the Cav's videos the trooper could credibly say that when they arrived the fields were covered with enemy dead ..... a number of us were privileged to be in the fight for a while!!!

We were able to hold off the attack but were not capable of winning the battle without the Cav and every other element of support we got .....

I remember like yesterday, as the senior US person still standing, joyfully meeting and briefing the then LTC Glen Otis as his chopper landed inside the perimeter .... he was shocked by what he saw.

BUT ..... the Calvary was about to arrive and help save the day and the battle and in all likelihood TSN.

All of us who were there 46 years ago need to take great pride and solace in the fact that we served and succeeded in winning the battle of the 'largest ground assault on an airbase in the history of the Air Force."

And to remember fondly and reverently those with whom we fought and who gave their all.

Comments:  Fourty-six years ago, at approximately 1400 hours, the word came to all security policemen.  Go back to your barracks, draw your combat gear, report to the arms room, sign for your weapon and standby.

The 377th Security Police Squadron, had just gone into "Security Condition - Red," while the remainder of Tan Son Nhut Air Base, remained in "Condition - White."

It would be just a matter of hours before the world, as we knew it, would change dramatically.

I remember just like it was yesterday!

I also remember those military personnel who were KIA and WIA during the Tet Offensive, Jan 31, 1968 - Feb 18, 1968.

Hopefully some of us can meet again at the up coming 377th SPS Reunion, in Wilmington, DE.

Comments:  I'm going to celebrate the importance of this Tet Offensive Anniversary, January 31, 1968, further by referring to the:

25th Div. AFTER ACTION REPORT, now found in the Texas Univ., Bud Harton Collection, shown on the 3/4 Cav web page, quoted herein  . . . Troop C attacked the VC force from the northwest drawing heavy fire from the Textile Mill.  It succeeded in cutting off the trailing VC battalions from their source of weapons in the Mill.  It then became heavily engaged with the VC forces in the vicinity of Gate 51, losing over a third of it's strength while destroying the capability of the VC force to continue the attack.  This was the decisive force, and action, which defeated the main VSN on Tan San Nhut.(end quote)

The VC had attacked in a column of battalions, prepared to pour through a breach in the perimeter of Tan Son Nhut.  The heavy weapons of each of the battalions were set up in the Vinatexco Textile Mill, a structure west of Gate # 10.   Anti-aircraft weapons were placed on the roof.

The attack of Tan son Nhut commenced at 0321 hours when heavy fire was received on the base from all around the perimeter.  The main attack by a 3 battalion force was launched from the West Gate # 51, while secondary attacks were aimed at Gate # 10 and northern gate # 58.  The initial assault defeated several bunkers guarding Gate 51 and the leading battalion penetrated the defenses and got approximately 200 meters inside the wire, in the direction of the main runway.

The Tan Son Nhut Commander requested US Combat Forces around 0430 hours.  The 3d Sqdn, 4th Cavalry, 25th Inf Div was committed.  The squadron was deployed on Route 1 from the Hoc Mon Bridge, 8 miles from TSN, to Go Dau Ha.   Troop C, at the Hoc Mon Bridge responded first.  It was guided cross country past potential blocking (ambush) positions by th Sqdn Commander who dropped flares from his C&C (Command & Control) helicopter.  This technique permitted the troop to arrive before light, at 0600 hours, avoiding the planned VC ambushes.

Vietnamese Air Force and USAF airstrikes were put on the Textile Mill in the morning hours and partially neutralized its fire.

As a famous person often said:  "Now you know the rest of the story."

Do you happen to have any information on who was assigned to that unit the first half of 1971???

One of the men assigned was wounded in a blast downtown {A theater I think} and I wondered if he was ever awarded the Purple Heart??

He was from Baltimore, and he went by the nickname "Duke" because he was a ringer for a young John Wayne.
