Long Island Sergeant Killed in Vietnam.

A 22 year old Air Force Sergeant from Woodhaven, New York was reported killed in action on Jan 31, 1968, Tan Son Nhut, Air Base, Republic of Vietnam.  Sgt Fischer was serving with the 377th Combat Security Police Squadron, at the time of his death.  His death was reported by the Defense Department.

He was Air Force Sergeant Louis H. Fischer.  Sergeant Fischer, was buried today in the Long Island National Cemetery of Pine Lawn.  He was the 368th Long Island Serviceman to die in Vietnam.

A life long resident of Woodhaven, he was born and raised in Cypress Hills.  He was baptized in the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Cypress Hills where his parents had his mass offered today.

Sergeant Fischer was a graduate of Public School, 171 and Franklin K. Lane High School in Cypress Hills and enlisted in the United States Air Force in August 1965.  He had been in Vietnam since April, 1967.

Members of the Woodhaven Post, American Legion held services Sunday night at the N.F. Walker Funeral Home in Woodhaven.

Sergeant Fischer leaves behind his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Fischer, a sister, Mrs Ann Franz and his brother, Henry of Woodhaven.

On Jan 31, 1968, Sgt Fischer was manning the 0-51 Bunker, Echo Sector, Tan Son Nhut, Air Base, RVN.  He was being assisted by four other Security Policemen, on this fateful night.  A human wave of NVA and VC attacked Tan Son Nhut from thirteen different directions.  Sgt Fischer's bunker was hit first and four of the five Security Policemen would lose their life this night. Sgt Fischer being one of them.

Sgt Fischer is buried at Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale, New York.
