Feb 1, 1968 An Ambulance's Unauthorized Entry, Tan Son Nhut's Main Gate Main Gate: "Security Control, Main Gate! Security Control, Main Gate! An ambulance has just run the main gate onto post, heading west on Republic Street, toward the 1300 area." Security Control: "Main Gate, Roger!" Security Control: "Any unit, Any unit, in the vicinity of the main gate, do you copy, last traffic." Base Police: "Security Control, Base Police, copy direct. We can see the ambulance but it is quite a distance in front of us. In pursuit." Security Control: "Roger that, keep this station advised." Base Police: "Security Control, Base Police. The ambulance has now turned north, onto Main Street, heading toward the flight line." Security Control: "All units near Main Street, can anyone intercept? (There was no answer.) Base Police: "Security Control, they are still going up Main Street and approaching, Central Security Control and the flightline entry control point." Security Control: "Roger that. Charlie Entry Control point, they are approaching your location.
Charlie Entry Control point: "Security Control, roger that!" (Charlie Special machine gun post is located at the same intersection with Central Security Control and Charlie Entry Control point.) Charlie Special machine gun post: The sergeant of the special machine gun post, yells at the Charlie Entry Control point, "If it appears the ambulance is not going to stop for you, get into your bunker as quickly as possible, as we are going to open fire on it." Charlie Entry Control point: Yelling in a loud voice! "Here it comes everyone, get ready!" The entry control point attempts to stop the ambulance. (The ambulance does not stop.)(The entry control point man gets into his bunker. Charlie Special machine gun post, fires a short burst from the M-60 machine gun, toward the vicinity of the ambulance, but intentionally letting the rounds, hitting the ground. The ambulance comes to a quick halt and all guns remain pointed at the ambulance. The sergeant from the special machine gun post gives a series of orders, to the occupants of the ambulance. The occupants of the ambulance are removed and it is determined they are, two US military personnel. They are placed under apprehension. Taken away by Base Police, to be questioned. About an hour later, the sergeant of, Charlie Special Machine gun post and his partner, an A1C, are temporarily removed from their duties to give official statement's on the matter, against the two military men. The security police sergeant and the A1C were returned to duty, at Charlie Special machine gun post. (No one was injured, from the machine gun fire.) Charles Penley |
